By now you know that I am a Career Coach and Health & Wellness Coach. However, the journey to get here is one of hardship, challenges and belief in myself that everything would work out.

My story begins in March of 2020. I loved my job, I was part of a high performing sales team and my role was to coordinate the behind-the-scenes tasks to help this team deliver success. After 12 months in the role, I had just interviewed for a promotion with a wonderful General Manager. I had performed exceptionally well in this interview and I could see a future in this company. The following week COVID-19 swept across the globe and 2 months later I was packing up my desk in an abandoned office. I handed back my laptop to my manager on a walk in our local neighbourhood because I had been made redundant. (PS this was the best manager I have ever worked with xx)

In the blink of an eye my career had taken 180 degree turn and there was nothing I could do in that moment of time to change anything. I was scared and heading straight into ambiguity. See, in challenging times you can either breakdown and cry. Or build yourself, level up and grow.

This would not be the end of me.

After some downtime I made friends with a variety of recruiters, I completed lots of temp work and short-term stints. I upskilled as LinkedIn learning became free during this time. I networked and caught up with some of the leaders in the industry who were impressed by my background and work ethic. I connected to nature and I started a new habit of walking twice a day.

I was taking it day by day during this period of uncertainty and self-discovery. Though my lowest point during all of this was interviewing for one particular role. Where during the second interview I was required to complete an in-person technology and systems exam.

Now hear me out. In this exam I had to use an Apple Mac laptop, to do spreadsheet functions… on Google Suite…

I swear this device was missing buttons and functions! If you, like me have always conducted your work on a PC and used the brilliant Microsoft Office (I accel in excel) you will know the struggle I went through. Also keeping in mind that I was a Data Analyst in a previous role!

I ran out of time, I had failed.

Defeated. I left the interview and walked through the rain in my suit to the bus stop. I just wanted to get home, I felt horrible.

My phone had rung during the interview and I had one missed call and a voice message. This connection would turn out to me one of the best recruiters in Sydney, who has kept in touch and encouraged me in this new chapter ever since that day. Her and her manager put me up for some fantastic opportunities, they played sounding board, gave me the best advice (and they still do!) as well as a template to rebuild my CV. I was inspired, my luck was changing and eventually I returned to full time work and I have been grateful ever since.

What I learnt during this journey, is that you can’t hold onto anger and hostility. Things happen in life that are out of your control, yet the magic happens when you finally stop holding onto what is not meant for you and start allowing the universe to direct you to where you are destined to be. It is important to know your worth. You are skilled. You are talented. You will be an asset to the next company/opportunity.

Let's jump forward to today where I work at a good company, supporting wonderful teams, managers and colleagues. I am respected, I am appreciated. I am grateful.

I had to go through this journey to learn, to grow and to evolve. I developed my skillset and I’ve started my own business Coaching by Ross. My purpose is to give back and help people through challenging times. To help unlock that potential and help my clients to live out their dreams.

If my story resonates with you and if you are going through murky waters right now. Know that deep down, everything will work out for your highest good.
